Pvt Jefferson was born on June 5, 1924 in Queens, New York. He was killed in action on Wednesday June 7, 1944 during the airborne invasion of Normandy.

Pvt Jefferson is the son of Harry Jefferson [b. 1882 in NY] a shipping clerk at a department store and the son of Bridget Jefferson [b. 1887 in Ireland, came to the US in 1905].

The 1930 US Census for Hollis, Queens, Queens County, NY shows John residing at # 109-84 195th St with his parents and 2 sisters, Elizabeth [b. 1913 in NY] and Helen [b, 1919 in NY] and brother Harry [b, 1922 in NY]. Also living at this address was John’s grandfather Henry Jefferson age 80 born in England, came to the US in 1856.

Pvt Jefferson enlisted in the Army on Feb 17, 1943 at NY, NY. His enlistment records states John had completed 3 years high school was 5’9’’, 141 lbs, employed as an optician and was single.

Pvt Jefferson was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and the Croix de Guerre Unit Citation [French], the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star and Arrowhead, World War II Victory Medal, WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Presidential Distinguished Unit Emblem.

Pvt Jefferson is interred at the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY, at Section “H” Site “8889”.
