Glenn Miller
Music often has a way of capturing the moment eternally in our minds. Glenn Miller's swing style of music will always conjure
up the image and memories of America during the war years of the 40's. And his signature song
"Moonlight Serenade" became "America's 2nd national anthem" during that period.
In 1942 Glenn Miller (picture left) enlisted in the Army Air Corp and received a Captain's commission. Miller instantly imprinted his
style of music on the armed services by having his band march to swing songs rather than the customary marches. The bands
first engagement was on July 28, 1943 in the Yale Bowl. But music wasn't his only forte. He raised over 4 million dollars in
war bonds during 2 rallies in St. Louis in 1943.
The next year Miller received his long sought after overseas assignment. He took his 62 musicans to England where he played 71
concerts from June to November 1944. (concert ticket stub above right) There, in less than one year, the Glenn Miller Army Air Force
Band engaged in over 800 performances. A majority of these performances were broadcasts heard by millions. Attendance
at the bands personal appearances numbered more than 500,000. Sadly, however, Glenn Miller was not present for many of
these performances.
In his enthusiasum to make the proper arrangements for a scheduled six-week tour of Europe, Miller decided to go ahead to
Paris. In one of the great mysteries of World War II, Glenn Miller boarded a transport plane to Paris on December 15th 1944
and was never seen again.
